Protected Plants on Alicante Coast

Alicante regional government is to protect five rare species of plant on the Alicante Coastline .

They will be included in a catalogue of endangered plants produced by the department of the environment .

By including them in this catalogue it wiill establish criteria to ensure their survival in the natural environment .

Wild Garlic is a very common Mediterranean plant but in the Valencian region it is rare and can only be found in Torrevieja , Altea and Calpe.

Portuguese Crowberry is found prolificallyon the Atlantic coast but was only discovered on the cliffs at Alfaz del Pi in 1993.

It is the only known site for it in the Mediterranean

La Zamarilla de yesar can be seen in Orxeta , Polop ,Finestrat , La Nucia , Altea and Alfaz del Pi but does not grow in any other part of the world .

Thymus webbianus is only found on the Penon d’Ifach in Calpe .
